Masterlist Deadline Extended!

Hey, guys! So, it's the 15th. Which means, yes, fic deadline to be included on the Masterlist is technically today. HOWEVER. Because of LJ's recent asshattery, the deadline to submit your fic to the Masterlist has been extended to August 31. I see that some of you have already started posting your fics, which is awesome, and I can't wait to read them, but for the rest of you, you have a couple weeks' grace period before those fics are due!

As a reminder, once you finish, post a link to your fic on the Masterlist Post and I'll add your fic to the list. Remember to include:

Word Count:
Summary or A/N:

Thank you all so much for playing, and looking forward to seeing an awesome array of Bardified fics for the month of August! ♥

Play/scene/sonnet: Much Ado About Nothing
Pairing(s)/Character(s): Harry/Draco, Ron/Pansy
Rating: PG
Word Count: ~7500

Warnings: DH non-compliance, misappropriation of the public domain, Shakespearean crack
Notes: Written for shakes_that_fic multi-fandom Shakespearathon, bunny thanks to the amazing merrycontrary, who went so far as to enable H/D, read it even though she wasn't done with her own assignment, and help me come up with a title just to get me to write this. I vote that means this belongs to her. ♥

One-Month Reminder!

Hey, everyone! Just a reminder: fics will be due a month from now, on August 15, 2007, if you would like them to be included on the Master List!

Hopefully things are going well for you! I've seen people discussing betas, exchanging ideas, brainstorming, etc., and I'm delighted to see people seem to be having fun! If there's anyone who's having difficulty though, you're welcome to post about that here - I'm sure someone will be willing to help you tease out an idea, or push past a block, or offer suggestions on characterisation or plot elements or anything like that. Don't be shy!

Questions/comments/suggestions? Let me know! And good luck and happy Barding to all!

Once fics are posted, the masterlist will go here. Fics will be arranged both by source material and by fandom.

If you would like to provide a bunny instead, this is the place to do that too. Comment using the following information:

Play/scene/sonnet: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Fandom: Harry Potter
Brief summary/characters/other info: Harry and Ron both love Hermione. Ginny loves Harry, but Harry doesn't notice her. When they all run away into the Forbidden Forest, Draco follows and decides to cause some mischief.

Bunnies Available

  • Play/scene/sonnet: A Midsummer Night's Dream
    Fandom: Harry Potter
Brief summary/characters/other info: Harry and Ron both love Hermione. Ginny loves Harry, but Harry doesn't notice her. When they all run away into the Forbidden Forest, Draco follows and decides to cause some mischief.

  • Play/scene/sonnet: Hamlet
    Fandom: Harry Potter
Brief summary/characters/other info: Featuring Draco as Hamlet, Lucius as King Hamlet, Narcissa as Gertrude, Rodolphus Lestrange as Claudius, Pansy as Ophelia, Blaise as Horatio, OMC of your choice as Laertes, Fred and George as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (respectively), Harry as Fortinbras, and OMC of your choice as Polonius. You all know the plot of Hamlet, so do the math: Rodolphus kills Lucius to gain access to his fortune/his wife, Draco is the one who figures it out, twisted relationship with Pansy, kills her father, goes insane, contemplates suicide... I think I've said enough. :)

  • Play/scene/sonnet: Pericles
    Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Brief summary/characters/other info: Pericles, Act IV, Scene 1 has the famous stage direction ENTER PIRATES, leading to Marina's kidnapping. Shakespeare never shows her aboard the pirate ship, but it could be a great setup for a PotC setting. [I like the idea of her facing Captain Jack, but it's not my fic to write...]

  • Play/scene/sonnet: King Lear
    Fandom: Harry Potter
Brief summary/characters/other info: Alphard Black is Lear. Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa are Regan, Cordelia, and Goneril respectively. Sirius is Edgar, Regulus is Edmund.

Reference Page

This is your source for all things Shakespeare, be it summaries, links to text of plays/sonnets, shared bunnies, information on how to follow in the Bard's footsteps, whatever. If you have a prompt to provide, this is the right place to leave it. If you have technical questions about Shakespeare, this is where you ask them. If you need help sorting out which is Edgar and which is Edmund, or can't figure out whether Draco is more Katherina or Bianca, you can ask those here too, and we'll do our best to help.

Technical Info

  • Plays: Shakespeare wrote largely, though not always, in iambic pentameter. Typically, prose (a.k.a. text without rhyme and discernible rhythm) denotes lower-class characters, comedy, and less-important text. Later plays incorporated blank verse. In most cases, even when a scene does not use rhyme and fixed rhythm, the scene will end in a heroic couplet. His plays are also noted for their use of introspective soliloquy, double entendres, and rhetoric.

  • Sonnets: Shakespearean sonnet form consists of fourteen lines organised into one cohesive stanza, subdivided into three quatrains and a couplet. Sonnets are in iambic pentameter, with rhyme scheme ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. The couplet introduces a sharp twist in imagery or theme, called a volta.

Shakespeare is also thought to have parodied the Petrarchan or Italian sonnet, which is also fourteen lines but is organised into either two quatrains or an octave (8 lines), followed by a sestet (6 lines). The rhyme scheme of the octave is ABBA ABBA, and the sestet may either be Petrarchan (CDC ECE), Italian (CDE CDE), or Sicilian (CDCDCD). A Petrarchan sonnet, rhetorically, is structured to pose a question, present a problem, or posit an idea in the first eight lines, and answer it in the sestet.

Questions? Concerns? Confused about something? Feel free to ask!

The Shakespeare Pan-Fandom Ficathon

  1. Signups are now open! You can sign up up to the fic due date, so if you finish your first fic and decide to write another, can't think of an idea right off the bat, aren't sure if you'll have time, etc., there's plenty of time.
    • Each play/sonnet may be claimed any number of times, for fic and/or art, in any number of fandoms.
    • When claiming, give prompt (play title, play/scene, or sonnet number) and fandom. [This is to help us set up a master list - if you change your mind later, we won't kill you or anything.]

  2. If you have ideas but don't feel up to writing them, you're welcome to share them! To provide a bunny for someone else to write, comment to the prompts post, and we'll add them ASAP. When prompting, include source material (play/sonnet/etc.), fandom, and a brief summary/characters/other information to help communicate your idea.

  3. Fic guidelines are as follows:
    • Any rating.
[NOTE: There is no age limit for participants, but you must be of legal age in your country to write adult fic.]
    • Slash, het, and gen are all acceptable.

    • Play pastiche/crossover: 5000-word minimum
    • Scene pastiche/crossover: 1000-word minimum
    • Sonnet-fic: 500-word minimum

**If you choose to write in verse (a sonnet, a script, etc.), there is no minimum word count. For more information on how to be authentically Shakespearean, check here.**

  4. Posting deadline is Friday, August 17, 2007.
    • You may post whenever or wherever you like; just comment to the masterlist post with a link to your fic so we can add you to the masterlist, which will hopefully go up no later than August 19 (my birthday!).
    • We highly encourage at least cross-posting fics on this comm (that's what it's here for, after all), but it's not required.

  5. Posting guidelines are as follows:
    • HEADER:

    • Although Shakespeare is canonically a kinky bastard, please warn for things like chan, incest, non-con/dub-con, RPF, and potential squicks (i.e. mpreg, bloodplay, breathplay, bestiality, filthplay, etc.).

  6. You must have a beta-reader. If you don't have one, you can comment to this post and we'll try to hook you up. Conversely, if you'd like to offer beta assistance, let us know! We'll be forever grateful. ♥

Questions? Comments? Concerns? Post them here and limmenel or I will get back to you ASAP!
